The educational experiences of refugee and immigrant children are affected by the age at which they arrived, their educational experiences in their homeland, their parents’ educational background, and where they settled. This section briefly outlines the educational history of Southeast Asian Americans and the parents’ educational opportunities, followed by a focus on the kindergarten to twelfth-grade (K-12) experience and higher education issues. The last part addresses how Southeast Asian Americans are getting involved with educational advocacy and issues in their homelands.
