 Although Southeast Asian Americans, like other Asian American groups, are often touted as being “model minorities” who came here as refugees “with empty hands” and have worked their way to success, this perspective hides the socioeconomic diversity of the population. Some segments are financially secure, while others face high levels of poverty and unemployment. This section outlines the kinds of resources that were provided to refugees and immigrants, the forms of employment that Southeast Asian men and women have found, and how they direct their earnings.
